Wayne Folk
For the past 11 years dj and producer Wayne Folk aka Black Zorro has traveled an impressive musical journey across the United States and Europe. As the owner of Metrarecords and the producer behind the "Past, Present, and Future" & "Man of Many Faces" LPs Wayne has made a lasting contribution to the global techno scene.
With his acid techno styles and international influences Wayne's unique sound stands out in both his eclectic dj sets and experimental productions. From his first DJ gig at a 6th grade birthday party to his residency at San Francisco's "The Top" Wayne has developed his sound into a mature and diverse electronic soundscape.
Wayne's diverse record collection is credited to his family's love for all things music. Whether it be the dirty Detroit sounds of Robert Hood or the early electro sounds played at the Chicago's Boom Boom Room, Wayne's library of music is truly one of a kind.
Growing up in San Francisco and playing with his brother Carl's funk records Wayne developed an early appreciation for leftfield musical genres. With local record stores like BPM Wayne was exposed to music across the entire musical spectrum. In addition to his family ties Wayne's other influences include his international travels to England and Spain as well as his ability to easily relocate to America's biggest musical cities like New York and Chicago.
From jamming out to Depeche Mode, Prince, INXS, and The Cure in his "bedroom dj" days in Chicago to rocking a MPC with long time production partner Jason Duer, Wayne has built a solid reputation for playing a creating experimental music.
By learning basic production techniques in Chicago and eventually releasing the "Past, Present, and Future EP" on his own Metrarecords, Wayne decided to focus on making his own music. In 2000 he moved from Chicago to NYC and started to build up an impressive studio. He worked with Richard Trott to create the "Green EP", which was heavily influenced by the modular sounds of djs like Carl Craig and Green Velvet.
After the release of the "Green EP", Wayne moved to London to find distribution for his records. His studio moved to Kensington Bayswater Road, across from Regents Park, and he quickly got involved in London's underground music scene.
Within a week of moving to London Wayne got distribution for the "Past, Present, Future EP" with Metropolis Records. After closing the deal with Metropolis, Wayne discovered, the agreement had a few issues that taught Wayne a good lesson in how the music industry really works. He now knows to put everything on paper!
From London, Wayne briefly lived in Barcelona, Spain. Here he collected quality techno records and enjoyed the laid back lifestyle of the Mediterranean. He also gathered some inspiration and direction on his new endeavors into experimental techno music.
In Barcelona Wayne's money started to run low and he eventually moved back to California, where he started doing graphic design for Alpha Graphics. He saved enough money to buy his own "Ensoniq ASR 10" and "Ravolution 309" Drum Machines. With the new ability to create deep analogue sounds Wayne started to produce the "Man of Many Faces" LP.
In mid production of "Man of Many Faces" Wayne moved to Brooklyn, NY and collaborated with Brad Erlandson aka 8 Bliss on the hip hop fusion track, "Homeward Bound". This was his first experience with recording vocals, but proved to be a success for the ever-growing Metra records.
With the Metrarecords.com now live on the web and Wayne's musical career in full swing things are starting to look up for this diverse musician. The 2005 release party for "Man of Many Faces" at Martignetti's Liquors in the East Village was a milestone in Metra Records brief history. Also, the signing and release of artists like downtime , Adam Virga & Ian Funk show the diversity of Wayne's musical network.
2006 sees only bigger and better things for Wayne and Metrarecords. With the possibility of touring in Berlin, Germany or Tokyo, Japan Wayne's search for the perfect beat continues. He is now primarily focusing on his record label and the releasing of quality techno, broken beat, and experimental music.
Wayne doesn't know where he'll be in the coming years, but be assured he'll be creating a soundtrack to wherever he is. From all of his travels and all of his musical experiences Wayne is ready to make his mark on the experimental electronic scene. Destination unknown…
